Ranger shot dead by his colleague

A GAME ranger has been accidentally shot dead while tracking suspected rhino poachers in a KwaZulu-Natal game reserve, according to a report

Zephania Mbuso Myeni, 39, who had been working for Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife for 18 years, was shot on Saturday evening.

Game reserve chief executive Bandile Mkhize said it was heartbreaking that he was shot dead by one of his colleagues.

Two field rangers at Mfolozi Game Reserve had picked up two human tracks leading in a southerly direction.

Four field rangers, including Myeni, who held the rank of corporal in the anti-poaching unit, were then sent to investigate.

The group split into two teams near a site where suspected poachers had been heard firing shots.

In the dark more shots were fired. One of the teams retaliated, without realising they were shooting at their colleagues. The poachers escaped. - Sapa
