Dismissal of sex warder welcomed

PARLIAMENT'S portfolio committee on correctional services has welcomed the prisons department's dismissal of a correctional officer at the centre of a sex video scandal.

Two weeks ago Sowetan published a story about two law enforcement officers who were recorded having sex in a hospital waiting room.

The correctional officer Big* and and Nina*, a female police reservist, were seen having sex in a waiting room at Leratong Hospital in Kagiso on the West Rand. Both of them are married and also live in Kagiso.

After the incident Big was suspended and dismissed by the department on Tuesday.

Committee chairperson Vincent Smith said: "We are happy with the decision to dismiss the officer and we commend the speedy way in which the case was handled."

The Department of Correctional Services confirmed that the man had been dismissed.

Big had admitted to recording the seedy incident and told Sowetan the reason he did it was that the footage would help him in case Nina later accused him of rape.

The committee also expressed concern that offenders sentenced to life imprisonment before a certain date must be considered for parole after serving as little as 13 years behind bars.
