ANC Youth League members blew vuvuzelas and danced in the streets of Johannesburg last night in support of league president Julius Malema.

Last week, the ANC announced that Malema and ANCYL spokesperson Floyd Shivambu would face disciplinary hearings on charges of bringing the party into disrepute and sowing division.

Malema and Shivambu face the ANC's disciplinary hearing today and tomorrow.

By midnight last night, about 200 supporters had arrived at Beyers Naudè Square, just a block away from ANC headquarters Luthuli House. More were expected to be bused in from all over the country.

One of Malema's supporters, Thabile Mangena, said: "We are positive that the outcome (of the disciplinary hearing) will be in Malema's favour. As a parent, you discipline a child when it's naughty, you do not throw it out. That is what we expect the ANC to do in this case."

Malema's devotees hoisted flags and placards in support of the beleaguered ANCYL leader. One of the placards carried by a zealous Malema loyalist read: "Leave our president alone. Save Malema."

The other one read: "The cowards are scared, we must shoot ... shoot with a gun."

Some carried placards denouncing everything from capitalism and Vodacom to Botswana's president Ian Khama. "We say no to a military base in our continent that is under US control. Ian Khama - the puppet - is an insult to Africa. Viva Julius Malema," read another placard.

The group burned a Vodacom T-shirt and danced around it. "We must be disciplined," one of the members said as the group blocked traffic at a robot.

More than 200 police officers were deployed around Luthuli House.

Roads around the building were closed to traffic to make way for Malema's supporters.

Supporter Phillip Ngwane said he had taken leave from work to be able to stand behind his president.

"We have hope that justice will prevail, whatever the outcome is, we as supporters will take it from there," he said.

Police outside Luthuli House said roads will be closed all night and possibly the whole of today. - additional reporting by Sapa
