ANC Youth League picks young city manager

THE ANC Youth League in the eThekwini region has announced Cyril Xaba - the current adviser to KZN Premier Zweli Mkhize and chairperson of the province's planning commission - as their preferred candidate for the city manager's post.

The position remains vacant since Mike Sutcliffe's contract came to an end in June, bringing to an end his nine-year reign as head of the eThekwini municipality. The city offered him a renewable month-to-month contract but for no longer than six months.

Youth League regional chairman Jomo Sibiya said yesterday Xaba was the best man for the job.

"As the youth we want a black person to take over," he said. "The position of the city manager is a critical post but we feel the council has not done justice to the people of eThekwini in relation to equity, transformation and awarding of tenders.

"At present the council is under investigation for maladministration and the buck stops with the manager."

Sibiya said they wanted someone who would be biased towards the youth as they have been not been employed in the past.

"The new city manager must be someone who will deal with corruption and ensure the representation in senior management positions according to the demographics of the province.

"Xaba's academic credentials speak volumes, his experience in terms of administration is not questionable and he understands the politics of eThekwini and the dynamics other city's dynamics," he said.

Sibiya said they would go all out to influence the ANC on the appointment and also lobby other political parties to support Xaba.

The youth league also took a swipe at the police's failure to make arrests in the Sbu Sibiya's murder.

"At his funeral we were told the police were following up positive leads and were just tightening some loose ends, but they can't be tightening loose ends for more than two months," deputy secretary Mduduzi Khuzwayo said. .

"We are giving the police until the end of September to make arrests or face the wrath of the youth league."
