THE Moretele regional court in Hammanskraal has sentenced a Mpumalanga man to life for raping a 95-year-old woman.
Johannes Molokomme of Pankop, outside Hammanskraal, was found guilty of raping the elderly woman, also of Pankop, last year.
The court heard that Molokomme broke into the victim's house around 3am on April 24 and raped her.
During the ordeal, the elderly woman screamed for help and neighbours ran to her house to investigate and found Molokomme on top of the granny, who lived alone.
Investigating officer Warrant Officer Modise Matsemela of the Mmametlhake police testified that when the neighbours broke into the house , they found that the granny's legs were tied with a rope while Molokomme was on top of her.
Matsemela said the neighbours grabbed Molokomme and, without hurting him, used the same rope he had used on his victim to tie him up.
They then called the police.
Passing sentence yesterday, Judge Danie van der Berg said rape against elderly people in theMoretele area was becoming too frequent and itwas his duty to defend the defenseless.
"I want to send a clear message to all those contemplating abusing women or children that we will deal with them harshly," van der Berg said.
