NPA official on drunk driving rap

ONE of national director of public prosecutions Menzi Simelane's deputies is expected to appear in court in August for driving under the influence of liquor

Silas Ramaite, one of four deputies under Simelane, was arrested near Louis Trichardt late on Friday, June 10, after he had allegedly crashed his Jaguar into a bakkie, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

"No one was injured, but local police could see he was drunk and arrested him. No breathalyser was done, but they could physically see, because of his wobbling, that he was drunk."

He spent the night in jail and appeared in the Louis Trichardt magistrate's court on Saturday, where he was released on R1000 bail.

Blood samples were taken and sent for testing.

"We expect to get them back before his next appearance," Mulaudzi said.

Ramaite was alone in the car at the time. The driver of the bakkie was not injured and was found to be sober.

The Star newspaper reported on Monday that Ramaite was still on duty despite the charge. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga confirmed that Ramaite was still on duty.
