Protests turn ugly

SEVEN people have been arrested for public violence during protests in Windsorton over two days this week, Northern Cape police said

Residents were apparently unhappy with the state of the municipality, spokesperson Captain Cherelle Ehlers said.

"Irate community members locked municipal workers up in the offices of the local municipality and blocked the main road with rocks and tree trunks."

On Wednesday a group of about 300 people set the municipal buildings and the local library alight.

Public order police used rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse the crowd. A stone thrown by a resident hit a policeman in the face.

The seven appeared in the local magistrate's court on public violence charges. They were denied bail and would remain in custody until their next court appearance on June 30.

In nearby Danielskuil on Wednesday, residents blocked roads and burnt tyres in front of the municipal offices. They were reportedly unhappy with newly elected mayor Gloria Kgoronyane and other appointments made after the recent local government elections.
