Hijacked cop dies in hospital

Off-duty policeman was shot when he tried to fight off his attackers

A NORTH West policeman died in hospital yesterday morning after he was shot in a hijacking near Klipgat, provincial police said.

Warrant Officer Setungu Aaron Modukanele, 42, was shot in the stomach and jaw and dragged out of his Jeep Cherokee by two men at Madidi village on Friday night, spokesperson Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

He and three of his relatives were waiting in the car for a fourth family member at the time, shortly before midnight, and about to leave for Rustenburg.

Modukanele, who was off-duty, was shot a second time when he tried to fight off his attackers.

His relatives jumped out and ran for cover. They were unhurt.

The two attackers fled in the car.

It was found abandoned in Mabopane, near Pretoria, on Saturday.
