MEC gets mixed reactions

LIMPOPO's budget presented yesterday by treasury MEC David Masondo was met with mixed reactions.

This was after Masondo failed to say what "concrete" steps the province would take to create job opportunities.

Masondo mentioned the number of jobs that would be created by the various departments but failed to outline what process would be followed to create these opportunities.

He said, for example, that the departments of economic development, environment and tourism would create 36846 jobs and that another 36503 jobs would be created by the department of local government and housing.

Masondo said a further 25063 job opportunities would be created by the health and social development department.

The department of education is expected to create 22242 opportunities.

DA provincial leader Desiree van der Walt said they would monitor how the government was going to allocate those jobs.

"It is interesting to know how those job opportunities are going to be allocated," she said.

Cope provincial leader Sello Moloto praised Masondo's budget speech but wanted to know what measures would be applied to curb corruption.

"We will see whether the R20 billion allocated to education will be used for its intended purpose. We are also worried about the job creation methods to be followed," Moloto said.

Cosatu provincial secretary Dan Sebabi said the budget did not outline government's vision of moving to 2020.

"The speech does not give an indication of what happens post-2011. It also does not mention how we intend to achieve the proposed national target of five million jobs," Sebabi said.

Businessman Tom Boya said the budget accommodated the poor.
