Evita's night of glory

THE musical Evita emerged as the biggest winner at The Naledi Awards at the Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg.

The production scooped seven awards and Death of a Colonialist followed with three statuettes. Evita won best production of a musical, best male performance in a musical, best female performance in a musical, best musical directors, best original choreography, best theatre lighting and best costume design.

Rhythm City actor Jamie Bartlett took the coveted best actor in a lead role. Marianne Oldham walked away with the best actress in a lead role for The Girl in the Yellow Dress. The same show also won the best new South African play.

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to "South Africa's most famous white woman, Evita Bezuidenhout", for her witty, refreshing and fearless observations of the social fabric of the country over the past 30 years.

Mama Mia actress Kate Normington bagged the best performance by an actress award in a supporting role. The best community theatre production award was shared by Awaiting Trial and We Can, This is our Home.

Khaya Maseko walked away with the best performance by a newcomer. Maseko shone in African Tapestries.

Nat Ramabulana was named the best performer in a supporting role for his contribution in Master Harold and the Boys. Butcher Brothers was named the best cutting-edge production.

Other winners include: best theatre set design-Johan Engels for The Boys in the Photograph and best theatre sound design - Freddy Malesa for Songs of Migration.

The awards honour people who have distinguished themselves in theatre.

Groups such as Soweto Gospel Choir, the Bala Brothers, PJ Powers, Alan Committee and the Quartet Complete (from Songs of Migration) entertained the audience last night.
