IFP introduces shadow cabinet

THE IFP in KwaZulu-Natal has introduced a shadow cabinet system to deepen its oversight capacity, the party said yesterday.

"In order to deepen our own oversight capacity we will delegate responsibility for particular government portfolios to individuals in our own ranks within the framework of a shadow cabinet," Bonginkosi Buthelezi, the IFP leader in the legislature, said.

The ANC-led KwaZulu-Natal legislature has five parties and the IFP is the official opposition.

The shadow cabinet system is a parliamentary system based on the Westminster model and it is currently used by the Democratic Alliance in Parliament.

The announcement of the IFP shadow cabinet was made in Durban and the briefing was attended by IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi but he did not speak.

Journalists were not allowed to ask questions not related to the event.

"Another briefing will be organised for that," Bonginkosi Buthelezi said.

The IFP is facing a serious exodus of members to its breakaway party, the National Freedom Party led by the party former chairperson, Zanele Magwaza-Msibi.

Explaining how the shadow cabinet would function, Buthelezi said shadow MECs would keep a watchful eye on the ANC-led provincial government.

"Each member of the executive will be shadowed by a member of the official to ensure that his or her performance is continuously assessed," said Buthelezi.

He invited the media to appraise the performance of the shadow cabinet in the same way they appraised their counterparts in government.

The 10 shadow MECs are: Lionel Mtshali (economic development and tourism), Mntomuhle Khawula (arts and culture), Bonga Mdletshe (cooperative governance and traditional affairs), Henry Combrinck (agriculture, environmental affairs and rural development), Lindani Mncwango (education), Moses Madlala (human settlement and public works), Usha Roopnarian (health), Roman Liptak (finance) and Thulasizwe Buthelezi (community safety and transport).
