Bright pupil needs more funds to realise his dream

A SOWETO pupil who earned five distinctions in his matric examinations is desperate for more funding to realise his dream of studying medicine at the University of Cape Town

Bhukulani Secondary School pupil Vuyani Khumalo, 18, scored distinctions in mathematics, physical science, life sciences, isiZulu and geography.

Vuyani has secured partial funding to cover some of his studies but needs more money for upkeep and expenses.

"I am grateful for the partial funding but the truth is it will not be enough to cover all costs of my studies," he said.

Vuyani, who like many other pupils from township schools had his preparations not only affected by the disruptive 2010 World Cup but also by the teachers strike, had to work hard to pass.

"I have been accepted at the University of Cape Town and I intend to work harder. I will not disappoint," he said.

Mduduzi Mathe, former principal at Bhukulani Secondary School in Zondi, Soweto, described Vuyani as a blessing to the school.

The teenager was also the president of the representative council of learners.

"Bhukulani was blessed to have him as one of the learners," Mathe said.

"He is a genius and I am confident he will do well at university.

"He was a leader of his peers and we allowed him space to address and motivate his peers.

"He is a well-balanced learner and he is the first learner to obtain 98percent in mathematics in the school's history."

The school obtained 94 percent pass rate with 95 distinctions.
