Matric results approved

EXAMINATIONS quality assurance body Umalusi has given the Department of Basic Education the green light to release the 2010 matric results after declaring the examination process credible.

Umalusi chairperson Sizwe Mabizela, pictured, said that based on reports presented to them and having looked at irregularities that were of a technical and administrative nature, they were satisfied with the manner in which the examinations were conducted.

Mabizela said a total of 641533 candidates sat for the National Senior Certificate examinations and a total of 58 subjects were standardised on December 24.

Mabizela said raw marks were accepted for 39 subjects and upward adjustments were made to nine subjects, while downward adjustments were made to 10 subjects.

"At this stage effecting the recommendations of the standardisation process are under way and will be monitored," he said.

"We are pleased that for 67,24percent of the subjects we were able to accept raw examination marks as a fair reflection of what candidates are capable of. This is an indication for us that the qualification is stabilising and the assessment instruments are being pitched at the correct level."

Mabizela said it must be noted that for the subjects in which upward adjustments were effected no subject was adjusted to the maximum allowable in terms of the policies.

Asked if the recent public servants strike had had an impact on the examinations, Mabizela said: "The industrial action happened when pupils were getting ready to write their preliminary exams. By that time most schools would have completed their syllabus for the year and in our view we do not think that the majority of pupils were adversely affected and we received reports from the department about extensive interventions."

Umalusi senior manager for quality assurance Vijayen Naidoo said irregularities of a technical administrative nature were "those where candidates were caught bringing in unauthorised material into the exam room - issues that would not undermine the credibility of the exam".

The matric results will be released to schools on January 6.
