Florida kwaito concert cancelled

THE second leg of the African Musicians Against HIV and Aids (Amaha) free concert at Florida Lake has been cancelled.

Amaha chairperson Doc Shebeleza has apologised to the nation and urged people to disregard the advertisements still being aired, saying the concert, featuring mainly kwaito artists and DJs, had been put on ice.

"We apologise to the people for the inconvenience," he said.

"Most of the artists have been performing all over during the year and have hardly spent any time with their families and felt that they needed time with their loved ones."

The kwaito star said the event would take place on December 31 next year.

The concert was supposed to be a follow-up to the successful jazz version that took place the day after Christmas Day when thousands of music followers flocked to the lake for a fun-filled day.

The concerts are part of the organisation's campaign to highlight the plight of the poor and get the nation to land a hand. Shebeleza said the response from the public was overwhelming.

"We got people donating packages of food that we are going to hand over the needy. It is a pity that the second leg will not be staged because the first leg was a great success but it will be back next year," Shebeleza promised.

He said the organisation had a great year in terms of delivering to the needy - 29 fully furnished houses were handed over to beneficiaries while 1802 people received wheelchairs.

"We also buried a lot of people."

Amaha members will be heading to churches to worship the Lord as they usher in the New Year.

"We took a collective decision that we would all go to church after cancelling the concert. Different members subscribe to various churches," Shebeleza said.
