Furore over new house gets woman kicked out

ANGRY residents of Nyanga township in Cape Town have evicted a woman from a new house, claiming she moved in "too soon"

Zodwa Ndlovu was accused of settling in the house in the new Mpetha Square Project, a People's Housing Process initiative, prematurely. Under the project 58 houses have been built.

DA councillor Steven Vuba, also the chairperson of the area's sub-council, helped evict Ndlovu himself on Saturday.

"As the sub-council we don't support people getting houses unofficially. Even if she says someone gave her the house, there must be transparency," Vuba said.

He said only the city could allocate the houses.

But Ndlovu said the house was on her plot and she had only moved her shack away when construction started.

"It is my plot and the Project manager of Mpetha Square, Roger Carney, told me I could move in now."

She said she only left the new house because the community was insulting her and started burning tyres in front of her house on Friday night.

Carney's phone was switched off all weekend.

The community insisted that Ndlovu should have waited and moved when other families were allowed to move into their houses.

The chairperson of a local committee, Nomaphelo Doda, said Ndlovu's action had shown contempt for the community.
