Suspected serial killer arrested

The suspect allegedly enticed women looking for partners in a radio dating programme

POLICE in Limpopo are optimistic that they have arrested a suspected serial killer linked to the death of two women whose bodies were dumped in bushes outside Tzaneen.

Police said the 35-year-old man allegedly used a private radio station to lure his victims. The suspect allegedly enticed women looking for partners in a dating programme, lured them to deserted areas and later killed them.

He allegedly took them to picnic spots and subsequently killed them in the bushes.

Polokwane police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the two victims' bodies were found in a decomposed state in the bushes near a shopping complex outside Tzaneen.

Ngoepe said investigations into the murders followed an inquest on missing persons dockets opened by relatives of the victims in June and October.

The first victim, who worked for a private company in Gauteng, met the suspect after the two were linked by the radio station's dating programme in June. She was killed and dumped in the bush.

Ngoepe said the second victim was found dumped in the same area where the first victim was found.

He said the suspect, who lived in Makhwibidung village outside Tzaneen, was released on parole in October last year while serving a 17-year sentence for rape.

It is not clear how many years he had served for rape before he was paroled.

Police said they were worried that while the intention of the radio station was to help, it had been abused by people with evil intentions, causing people to lose their lives.

"The suspect was arrested and taken through all procedures," Ngoepe said.

"He even pointed out the spot where he left the bodies of the two women. We believe we have a strong case against him.

"The bodies will be taken to the forensic laboratory and we'll go deeper to find out if he had committed other crimes.

"We are hopeful of finding more evidence linking the suspect to other cases, including those of two girls, aged 6 and 17 years, whose bodies were found burnt last month," he said.

Ngoepe said they could not rule out serial killing since the man appeared to have used the same modus operandi in ending the lives of his victims.

Ngoepe said the man was expected to appear in the Polokwane magistrate's court today to face murder and kidnapping charges.
