Hot meal for just 5 cents

IF YOU are down and out in Cape Town, there is one place you can go to to get a hot meal for just five cents.

The Benevolent Service Dining Rooms says after 75 years of existence it is now serving 1,000 hot meals a day, five days a week.

Mishack Zikalala says he has been dining there for the past 10 years.

"I heard about this place when I was still living under the bridge here in town. We used to fight for food. But there was always this fellow street man whose stomach was full all the time," he says

"I asked him one day 'where do you eat?' and he whispered back, 'I eat at the service dining rooms'. The following day I came here and the rest is history."

Kitchen assistant Cynthia Mhlontlo of Khayelitsha says her 14-year stint at the place has made her realise the alarming levels of poverty in the country.

Operations manager Des Billings says it costs R60,000 a month to run the place and they rely mostly on donations.
