More kids abandoned in SA

THE number of abandoned children in South Africa is steadily increasing.

Child Welfare South Africa recorded 2,392 new cases of abandonment over the past year, with the majority being black.

The organisation recorded the increase to be between 8 percent and 10 percent year-on- year.

Current statistics put the figures of abandonment at:

  •  Black - 1,500
  • Coloured - 700
  •  Indian - 70 to 80
  • White - 30

Child Welfare South Africa also revealed that women from foreign countries abandoned their children in big numbers at the country's hospitals.
