The rise and fall of former top cop

FORMER national police commissioner Jackie Selebi has been a long- serving and trusted member of the ANC.

Selebi started off as a representative of the World Federation of Democratic Youth in Budapest, Hungary, from 1983 to 1987.

He was then elected head of the ANC Youth League in exile in Zambia in 1987. That year, he was also elected to the National Executive Committee of the ANC.

In 1991, he became responsible for the smooth repatriation of ANC exiles back into the country.

In 1993, Selebi was appointed Head of the Department of Welfare of the ANC.

In 1994, he was appointed to Parliament.

From 1995 to 1998, Selebi served as the South African Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

In 1998, he was appointed Director-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - a post he held for about a year. It was also in 1998 that Selebi received a Human Rights Award from the International Service for Human Rights.

In 2000, he was appointed the national commissioner of the South African Police Service.

He retired last year.

In 2002, while still the national commissioner of the SAPS, Selebi was elected vice-president of Interpol's African region.

In 2004, Selebi was elected as president of Interpol, where he served until 2008.

During his time with Interpol, Selebi also served as chair of the Anti-Landmine Conference in Oslo, Norway. He was also chair of Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster, and chair of the Human Rights Commission at the United Nations' 54th Session.

He made headlines in 2007 when he responded to media inquiries by saying: "What's all the fuss about crime?"

That same year, he also suggested making sex work and drinking in public legal for the duration of the 2010 World Cup.
