LEGENDARY maskandi musician Johnny Clegg is celebrating a triple fortune in his career.

He has released a documentary of his climb to the top of this mainly isiZulu music genre, two DVDs of his old music covering 30 years, as well as a signing with a US major record label.

The documentary, Spirit the Journey, most of which was shot at KwaMai-Mai in Johannesburg, is a journey of a remarkable man who defied apartheid restrictions to follow his heart.

The two DVDs feature the music he released while he was with Juluka and Savuka during the 1970s and 1980s.

They also include music in which he collaborated with the Soweto Gospel Choir at the Nelson Mandela Theatre in Johannesburg last year.

Speaking to Sowetan yesterday, Clegg - affectionately called the White Zulu - revealed that he had just signed a deal with US record label Apple Seed Records.

"This is a deal I have been waiting for for the past 10 years, and eventually it has happened as the company liked my music. I am going to release this album in October. It has been produced by a Brussels-based producer. I do not yet have a name for it," he said.

To promote his CD, he will perform 35 shows in the US and Canada starting in April next year.
