'2012 is not Polokwane 2'

ANC chief of campaigns Fikile Mbalula has rejected suggestions that the party's next elective conference will be a "bloodbath".

ANC chief of campaigns Fikile Mbalula has rejected suggestions that the party's next elective conference will be a "bloodbath".

The succession debate of the ruling party and its allies has put Mbalula at odds with party secretary general Gwede Mantashe.

A lobby group in the ANC and the ANC Youth League is actively campaigning for Mbalula to replace Mantashe as the party's secretary at the ANC's next elective conference in 2012.

Mbalula, who was part of the grouping that led to the anti-Mbeki coup in 2007, said the conference in Mangaung would not amount to "Polokwane 2".

He said the ANC would not allow contenders to fight "as if their lives are dependent" on the outcome of the conference.
