"Last night (Wednesday) as he was driving into his driveway, he went to greet neighbours across the road and came across three men who asked him for directions," Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge of the KwaZulu-Natal police said.
"When he turned around, he was shot dead, twice in the chest and once in the neck."
The deceased, Lieutenant Colonel Francis Pillay, worked for the police unit dealing with police disciplinary cases.
