SUSPENDED West Rand organised crime unit head Colonel Dumisani Jwara failed to inform the unit's Gauteng commander about a drug-related investigation in Ekurhuleni.

SUSPENDED West Rand organised crime unit head Colonel Dumisani Jwara failed to inform the unit's Gauteng commander about a drug-related investigation in Ekurhuleni.

General Simon Mapiyane told the Johannesburg high court yesterday that Jwara should have informed him about the investigation because it was outside his (Jwara's) jurisdiction.

"Each unit had to focus on an area designated to it but should there be information that goes beyond their area they must inform me. I was not informed about the drug case in Norkem Park in Ekurhuleni."

Mapiyane was testifying in the drug-dealing trial of three high-profile police officers attached to the West Rand organised crime unit - the unit's head Colonel Dumisani Jwara, and Captains Jwili and Landro Makgosani.

They have been charged with drug dealing, theft and defeating the ends of justice.

Mapiyane said the first time he heard about the case was when he and colleague Lieutenant Colonel Lebea were driving to the Honeydew police station.

"Lebea received a call and I could see there was something wrong after he had finished talking. He told me that the call was from an informant."

He said he called Jwara on his cellphone to ask him about the case and he "assured me that the information was never shared with any other person".

He said when Jwara came to see him he had two files and he was not happy with the standard of investigation.

Defence counsel Nardus Grové said the exhibits were taken to the lab and the results had not been sent to the investigating officer.
