THE sleepy town of Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, has a new beauty queen. Her name is Palesa Thole. She beat 12 other contestants on Saturday.

The judges agreed that Thole is the most beautiful girl in Hammanskraal, which includes Temba township .

It was a long night of tears, great music and a lot of fun. Palesa will enjoy the spotlight in town since there are not many celebrities in this part of South Africa.

The first princess is Portia Maluleke and the second is Busisiwe Hlanga.

The annual event is organised by young businessman and youth leader Mpho Mabitsela and attracts hordes of mostly young people. The music was again provided by local music groups.

The contest started at 8pm and the fun went on until the wee hours of the morning. Youth groups and young DJs took turns to entertain.

"We started this event to empower the youth in Hammanskraal," Mabitsela said.

"We are trying to help our community by making our local people self-sufficient. The parents of the contestants are fully behind us young people because they understand that we are trying to empower ourselves," he said.

"We will find something for all the finalists to do. I am considering starting a catering company for them so that as young people we can sustain ourselves.

"We actually do not have any income but we are determined that not to let anything stop us from doing what is right for our community," Mabitsela said.
