THE fight against corruption cannot be waged by the current ANC tripartite alliance as rhetorically claimed by Cosatu's Zwelinzima Vavi on SAfm's After 8 Debate.
Barking rather than biting at corruption in the public and private sectors does not help. Vavi was ingenious like President Jacob Zuma and ANCYL president Julius Malema.
Vavi said Cosatu made a noise about corruption, including the Shabalalagate scandal in which the ANC received R1million from a company that received R44million from the Health Department during the political leadership of Peggy Nkonyeni.
The ruling party refuses to return the R1million and the R3million distributed to its leaders. Cosatu has yet to call for the suspension of Sipho Shabalala.
Vavi also disputed that former MP Nyami Booi was found guilty in the Travelgate scam. Booi entered into a plea bargain like some of her colleagues.
He also sees nothing wrong with the withdrawal of corruption charges against Zuma and Nkonyeni as well as the dropping of investigation into ANC-aligned Mac Maharaj, Chippy Shaik and Ngoako Ramathlodi.
He defended the release of Shabir Shaik, who enjoys playing golf while he is "bed-ridden".
Vavi is correct that it is business that corrupts politicians.
If that is so, why did the ANC collective involve itself in the Oilgate, Travelgate and Shabalalagate scandals? Zuma's association with Shaik, Mabheleni Ntuli and Jurgen Kohl remains a big black spot in his life and renders him disabled to fight corruption.
Vavi must tell the nation how the post-Polokwane ANC will fight corruption with Menzi Simelane, Moe Shaik, Maharaj and Vusi Mona in key government positions?
We have had enough of barking at corruption, now the ANC must act against it .
