Call-up for jomo and dog

THE return of Jomo Sono and Clive Barker to the Bafana Bafana fold could signal the beginning of the end for beleaguered coach Joel "Still Building" Santana.

THE return of Jomo Sono and Clive Barker to the Bafana Bafana fold could signal the beginning of the end for beleaguered coach Joel "Still Building" Santana.

Respected SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has also been drafted into the Bafana technical team for the two friendlies against Norway and Iceland.

Conspicuous by his absence is decorated Maritzburg United coach Gordon Igesund, who boasts an unparalleled record of four league titles with four different clubs.

Sono's team, Jomo Cosmos, are treading water in the Absa Premiership.

Hunt is challenging for a third successive league title, while Barker is now in charge of development at AmaZulu.

The roping in of Sono, Barker and Hunt to the Bafana fold was confirmed by new Safa boss Kirsten Nematandani yesterday.

Sono and Barker are two coaches who also worked together when Bafana Bafana won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Said Nematandani: "The three gentlemen have been tasked to give us an objective assessment of Bafana Bafana against Norway and Iceland.

"Time is no longer on our side as the World Cup is just around the corner. The new executive promised to help Bafana Bafana and it is our first step towards assisting them."

Asked if the development was not an attempt to get rid of the clueless Santana, Nematandani said: "We are only doing this to assist our coach."

But sources close to the mother body yesterday said the move is the beginning of the end for Santana, who has dismally failed to turn Bafana Bafana into a world-class team.

Santana, who is earning R1,4million a month, is well aware he must win the matches against Norway and Iceland.

Nematandani said Mandla Mazibuko and Buti Lerefole have been added to serve on the Transnet Football School of Excellence board.

The executive added that Nematandani, Nomsa Mahlangu, Eric Mtshatsha and Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana will serve on the Local Organising Committee board.
