Funeka has to fight in Canada

THE chance of seeing Ali Funeka fight American Joan "Sycuan Warrior" Guzman in South Africa has gone up in smoke.

THE chance of seeing Ali Funeka fight American Joan "Sycuan Warrior" Guzman in South Africa has gone up in smoke.

Boxing legend Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions (GGP) won the purse bid and the rights to present this vacant IBF lightweight title fight.

The winning bid was R1,5million. Both Funeka, who is rated third, a spot above the American, and Guzman will be paid about R750 000.

This fight will take place at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Canada, on November 28.

It will be very cold in Canada at that time as it will be winter and Funeka's promoter, Mzimase Mnguni, reportedly said it will be foolhardy of his charge to fight in that country under freezing conditions.

Mnguni also said he was disappointed since he had hoped that his American associates Gary Shaw and Cedrick Kushner would win the bid and that he would persuade them to host the fight here.

"But it's not a blow," he said yesterday, adding that the purse money was better than what GGP had offered in their negotiations.

The contest will be the main supporting bout to the IBF super middleweight rematch between champion Lucian Bute and Librado Andrade. This will be Guzman's second shot at this title after he was outpointed by Nate Campbell in February.

l Sam Malinga lost the WBO Africa welterweight title on points to Ali Nuumbembe in Namibia.
