Police spokesperson Inspector Joey Jeevan said they received a report of gunshots being heard on premises in Pietermaritz Street in the Pietermaritzburg CBD.
"Police discovered the bodies of a female and male next to each other," she said. "Both had suffered gunshot wounds to the head."
They were identified as Phumlani Mlotshwa, 39, and Nelly Mkhize, 36. Jeevan said initial investigations found that the couple had argued earlier that evening.
"It is alleged that the altercation resulted in Mlotshwa shooting Mkhize before turning the gun on himself."
l Meanwhile, Eshowe police have welcomed the life sentences given to three men found guilty of killing a respected doctor in April.
The men were given three life sentences and between 30 to 25 years imprisonment by the Mtubatuba high court.
Dr John "Droes" Andrews, 55, was attacked and killed in his Eshowe home.
"It was a most horrific scene. Andrews was well respected in the whole of Eshowe," said Inspector Mbongeni Mdlalose.
The men were Siyabonga Emmanuel Magubane, 23, of KwaKhoza, Thokozani Sandile Khoza, 24, also of KwaKhoza, and a third man, Zamokuhle "Mubi" Mbonambi, 24.
Mbonambi was sentenced to a further five years for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
