Prisoners in soccer tourney

PRISONERS from Kutama-Sinthumule Correctional Service Centre in Makhado, Limpopo, will be part of the Fifa 2010 World Cup Legacy Projects through a soccer tournament on Saturday.

PRISONERS from Kutama-Sinthumule Correctional Service Centre in Makhado, Limpopo, will be part of the Fifa 2010 World Cup Legacy Projects through a soccer tournament on Saturday.

The four-team tournament is the brainchild of one of the inmates, Stambo Mokoatedi, and is sponsored by the provincial department of sports, arts and culture.

Departmental senior manager for sports development, Junior Ramusi, said the tournament would feature a team from the department and three teams from the prison.

"We believe that offenders have the right to benefit from the 2010 project as the project is about everybody and further that inmates can be easily rehabilitated through sport activities," Ramusi said.

"The Kutamasinthumule Fifa 2010 World Cup Legacy Project will not be a one-off event because there will be capacity-building programmes to ensure that inmates get training certificates in refereeing, coaching and sports administration. This will give them life after prison," he told Sowetan.

Faranani will play Sanibonani at 8am, while the second match will feature Tsakane against the department's team at noon. The final will take place at 4pm.
