OUR Giant and Charles Laird dashed the hopes of many an entrant in the 2009 Charity Turf Challenge as the import gave the country's best sprinters a lesson in speed.

This enabled 'El Picha' to keep his nose in front of rival William Venters by a mere seven points.

Will the diminutive 'El Picha' stay the distance or will his hopes be dashed on the line? Only time will tell as we head towards a close nail-biting finish in the Charity Turf Challenge.

Arguably best over a mile, Our Giant just two weeks earlier had contested the Vodacom Durban July and finished just under four lengths behind Big City Life.

Many felt that he would have found the pace too hot in Sunday's Mercury Sprint at Clairwood, but the big gelding was up to the task and simply ran away from them at the end.

He secured 15 points for his followers while third place Extinct, in giving of his best, garnered 10 points for his followers.

The only other points earner over the past weekend was Hurricane Silver, who secured 2 points for winning the Pinnacle Stakes in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

The lucky spot prize winners this past weekend were Okkie Britz and Joy Dunn who each won a R500 betting voucher - with the compliments of bookmaker Alistair Wybrow.
