THE executive committee of the Gauteng Promoters Association is disappointed by the manner in which Minister of Sport Makhenkesi Stofile handles issues pertaining to their beloved sport.
GPA chairperson Mxolisi Gumede, treasurer Reggie Hilman and secretary Gavin Hope were referring to the appointment of Dumile Mateza and Mesuli Zifo to turn boxing around.
Mateza, who is an SABC boxing commentator, and Zifo, a boxing correspondent for the Daily Dispatch newspaper, were appointed by Stofile last month.
The GPA was not privy to this development until Sowetan published the story yesterday.
Gumede, Hilman and Hope say Stofile jumped the gun with these appointments.
"We respect the minister and wish to continue doing so, but he too must show the same to us. The least he could have done was to consult with us," said Gumede.
"We requested meetings with him from last year that did not happen. But he agreed to our request for a forensic investigation into the current board of Boxing SA. How then does he appoint people when that process is still to take place?"
Gumede said they hoped that Stofile would at some point see it necessary to meet and hear the GPA out.
"We are a legal body that complied with the requirements of the Boxing Act. We are not only members of the boxing fraternity but also members of the public which elected the current government," Gumede said.
Hope said they were grateful to see the minister making a move to fix the sport but were unhappy with his approach.
"We still needed to meet him and raise our concerns. We have absolutely nothing against the two gentlemen he has appointed but it is just a matter of principle that makes us unhappy."
Hilman said they had tried to meet Stofile after failing several times to meet Boxing SA chairperson Peter Ngatane, even before chief executive Bongani Khumalo resigned in May.
"It does not matter now because we have already passed a vote of no confidence in him and his colleagues in the board," he said, making it clear the issues they wanted to raise with Stofile were relevant to the Boxing Act.
