New goals for Zodwa Khoza Cup

SAFA Soweto will use this year's edition of the ever- growing Philips Zodwa Khoza Memorial Cup to lure more women into the beautiful game and to teach club officials the art of branding and securing sponsorship.

SAFA Soweto will use this year's edition of the ever- growing Philips Zodwa Khoza Memorial Cup to lure more women into the beautiful game and to teach club officials the art of branding and securing sponsorship.

Khoza was the daughter of Irvin Khoza, Orlando Pirates and Local Organising Committee chairperson, and deputy president of Safa.

At the time of her death four years ago, she served as brand manager of Pirates.

She was one of the administrators who contributed to the Vodacom Challenge becoming such a successful global soccer tournament.

Phil "Chippa" Mogodi, Safa Soweto chief executive, said: "We started the tournament three years ago to celebrate the life of Zodwa, the noble marketing and branding initiatives that she brought into the game."

It has since grown in popularity, with 16 teams expected to take part in this year's tournament.

Mogodi said: "Most of the professional and amateur soccer clubs have people handling branding for their institutions after the position was popularised by Zodwa.

"It is for that reason that Safa Soweto has decided to add the lectures on branding, marketing and public relations as part of this year's tournament.

"Our clubs are struggling to acquire sponsorship, some of them being sent from pillar to post by various companies. We are inviting experts to help them with sponsorship proposals.

"We are also using it to lure more women into soccer administration.

"The finals will be played on August 9, to celebrate national Women's Day," Mogodi said.
