meningitis alert

SHAKASKRAAL, on KwaZulu-Natal's North Coast, is on high alert after two primary school pupils died of suspected meningitis.

A grandmother of one of the pupils has also died.

Provincial health officials have been treating pupils at the school, near KwaDukuza, since Monday and have been assessing schoolmates who have had close contact with the pupils.

Two pupils are being treated at the local hospital after they were admitted in a serious condition with meningitis-type symptoms: high fever, nose bleeds, headaches and vomiting.

Mpendulo Phangindaba, a Grade2 pupil at Shakaskraal Primary, died a week ago.

His grandmother, Celiwe Phanigindada, who was nursing him, died few days later. They were buried on Saturday.
