raped girl (13) sent to place of safety
The 13-year-old girl who escaped death after witnessing her best friend being raped and then strangled has been moved from her home in Lamontville, Durban, where the incident happened.
The girl, who was also raped, managed to escape from the attacker, who is allegedly her own brother.
He allegedly raped both girls at his home this week before strangling Thabisile Sithole.
Police spokesperson Mhlonishwa Khawula said the boy's sister is traumatised and the family has decided to send the child to stay with relatives.
"We are arranging for her to get counselling to deal with the ordeal that she went through, witnessing her friend being raped and killed and being raped by her own brother who is supposed to protect her," Khawula said.
The incident has left the community of Lamontville angry and in shock.
A neighbour who did not want to be named said that on the day of the incident the sister ran out of the house with blood dripping down her legs and told them what her brother had done to her and her best friend.
"Thabisile was found lying on the floor with her tongue sticking out," the neighbour said.
She said the community, especially the women in the area, were going to monitor the outcome of the case very closely.
The suspect, aged 20, was arrested shortly after the incident and remains in hospital under police guard after being assaulted by angry residents.
He will appear in court on a charge of murder and on two counts of rape as soon as he is discharged from hospital.
Police have urged parents to be more vigilant about the whereabouts of their children and to make sure they played where they could be seen.
