Africa's Woman Footballer of the Year Noko Matlou is excited at her imminent move to KR Fjurin in Iceland.
Matlou's rise to prominence in South Africa and on the continent has been amazing, and the move is the crowning glory of a phenomenal 2008.
Sensational 17-year-old midfielder Busisiwe Ndimeni will also be joining the same team as Matlou.
The two players are only awaiting medical clearance certificates before they jet out to the North Atlantic Ocean island.
At a time when female South African football players are gradually carving a niche for themselves on the international front, it was only a matter of time before a player as talented, determined and hard-working as Matlou outgrew the local scene.
"This move is a dream come true for me. I have always thought I would grab my opportunity when it presents itself and now that it has, I plan to make the most of it. I am even prepared for the weather, which I heard is the opposite of what I am used to in Limpopo," Matlou said.
Ranked 18th in the world, Iceland is streets ahead of South Africa, and with a mature domestic league, they offer more than our Sasol Women's League, which has only been around for a month.
Team manager Fran Hilton-Smith said their move to a top team there serves to advance the goal, which has always been about enhancing Banyana Banyana.
"We have our hearts set on qualifying for the World Cup, and we want to have as many players as possible overseas in order to achieve this," said Hilton-Smith.
