Athletics season ends on high note
The curtain will fall on the South African track and field season in fine style in Stellenbosch where top athletes will compete in the Yellow Pages South African Senior Championships this weekend.
They are expected to go for broke as this is the last event where they can qualify for the IAAF World Championships in Berlin in August.
The meeting will be held at Coetzenburg Stadium and more than 500 athletes will sweat it out from 10am today and 6am tomorrow.
It will be interesting to see Hezekiel Sepeng fighting it out in the 800m with younger brother Samuel in the field. Isaac Mboyasa and Tshamano Setone are favourites to win the 1500m, but Juan van de Venter has the poise to frustrate them.
The Phalula twins, Lebo and Lebogang, are once again set to shine in the 1500m.
The spotlight will also fall on the athletes who have already qualified for Berlin - long jumpers Khotso Mokoena and Janice Josephs, javelin thrower Sunette Viljoen and steeplechaser Ruben Ramolefi.
"We anticipate a no-holds-barred meeting in Stellenbosch because everyone wants to board a plane to Berlin in August," said Athletics SA's acting general manager, Molatelo Malehopo yesterday.
