Police in Levubu have arrested an ANC councillor for malicious damage to property after he allegedly vandalised a bundle of Cope posters in Limpopo.

It is alleged that councillor Joas Murovhi took Cope posters and burnt them near a car wash at Ha-Mutsha on Sunday after claiming that the posters belonged to a "useless organisation".

Police spokesman Captain Ntshengedzeni Makondelele said Murovhi was arrested and charged with malicious damage to property.

He said Murovhi's case was not referred for prosecution after it was referred to the Independent Electoral Commission.

Makondelele said Murovhi found posters at the car wash and asked car washers who they belonged to. He then took them and burnt them to ashes.

Cope secretary Avhatakali Mulaudzi said they were disturbed by the prosecution authority's decision that their case against the councillor could not be heard.

Mulaudzi said they will take the matter forward with the IEC.

Makhado municipality spokesperson Louis Bobodi said they were not aware about the arrest of the councillor.
