The violent rains that have devastated parts of Gauteng should begin to subside.

This is according to South African Weather Service forecaster Venetia Magane. She said there was less rain yesterday and this should be the case today.

"We predict only a 30% chance of afternoon thunderstorms," she said yesterday.

"A surface trough over the western interior along with tropical moisture resulted in the thundershowers over Gauteng," she explained.

Magane said the thundershowers had caused isolated floods such as those that swept through Soweto.

She also warned people to stay indoors when it rains.

"If people are driving, they need to stop and wait for the rain to subside.

"They should listen to the radio or watch TV for weather-related warnings."

But she said more rain was predicted for KwaZulu-Natal.
