Heroic Amajita to get fitting welcome
Amajita are set to receive a hero's welcome at OR Tambo International Airport this morning when they arrive from the African Youth Championship in Rwanda.
They will arrive at 6am and attend a press conference at 8.30am at the same venue. The junior South Africans finished fourth after they were beaten 2-1 by Nigeria on Saturday at Kigali Stadium in Rwanda.
Despite Saturday's defeat Amajita remain the only South African national soccer team to beat Nigeria during an official match since South Africa's readmission to Fifa in 1992.
Safa director of communications Morio Sanyane said they were happy with Amajita's performance despite the team's defeat at the hands of Nigeria.
"This is a great achievement for Amajita, considering that they had such a performance even without some of their key players whose Premiership clubs refused to release for the tournament," Sanyane told Sowetan yesterday.
"We would also like to commend the Serame Letsoaka-led technical team that has ensured that we qualified for the World Youth Championship to be held in Egypt and the semifinals in Rwanda."
George Maluleka scored for Amajita in the eighth minute, while Nigeria's goals were scored by Rabiu Ibrahim and Ganiyu Oseni.
