Criminals beware! You no longer have any place to hide.

High-tech surveillance camera systems loaded with the identities of wanted criminals will be installed in townships and suburbs that have a high incidence of aggravated crime.

The cameras have the ability to photograph people as they go past and spot those among them who are wanted by the police for high-profile crime. What they capture will be relayed to a control centre and police will then pounce.

Launching the provincial crime-fighting strategy known as "Gauteng aggravated robbery strategy" in Johannesburg yesterday, Premier Paul Mashatile said the surveillance cameras would be installed within three months.

"We will identify areas that have high incidences of aggravated crime," he said.

Mashatile said major banks have contributed R14million towards the project.

"Critical to the success of this strategy is that law enforcement agencies from all levels of government should work together towards a common objective," he said.

Mashatile said in order to improve access to policing services, the SAPS mobile units would be deployed in Diepsloot, Braamfischerville and Zandspruit, among other areas.
