vip COP is refused bail
KwaZulu-Natal MEC Meshack Radebe's VIP protection unit officer, who is facing eight charges of attempted murder, was denied bail by the Camperdown magistrate's court yesterday.
The state heard why 28-year-old Constable Hlanganani Nxumalo should be granted bail, but magistrate Thys Taaljaard denied him bail and postponed the case to December 11 for further investigation.
Investigating officer Jerome Mngadi told the court that according to the driver of the VW Golf in which Nxumalo was a passenger, they were rushing to meet Radebe at his home near Durban. Nxumalo was the MEC's bodyguard.
"According to the driver they were supposed to report to Radebe, but they received a call to be earlier than expected," Mngadi told the court.
Nxumalo, attached to the Alexandra Road police barracks in Pietermaritzburg, allegedly shot the tyre of a car on the N3 near Camperdown on Saturday. As a result, the driver lost control and it veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a bakkie.
There were six passengers in each vehicle, eight of whom were injured. Mngadi said the victims had indicated they feared for their lives, and granting Nxumalo bail would be a threat to their safety.
Opposing bail, prosecutor Rakesh Keshurpersad said the onus was on Nxumalo to convince the court why he should be granted bail because there were not sufficient reasons to release him. Keshurpersad said if Nxumalo was found guilty on the eight charges, he could face up to 40 years in prison.
