They were trusted as loyal employees but little did bank management in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, suspect that two of their consultants had allegedly swindled rich elderly citizens out of their money at a local branch of FNB.

The two consultants allegedly coerced the senior citizens into a fraudulent scheme, promising it would yield huge profits, according to police spokesman Leonard Hlathi.

"The victims later established that all their money had been illegally withdrawn from their accounts," he said.

About eight elderly people who fell victim to the scam laid charges with the police, who then arrested the two suspects.

Police said yesterday that preliminary investigations had shown that the suspects had stolen R200000 from the accounts.

They have appeared in court and their case was postponed to December 10.

They were not asked to plead and are out on warning.

Police have asked other victims to contact investigating officer Captain Jerry Maphanga on 082 494 1597.
