Nation builders on SABC
Special celebrity-led television shoots profiling the national finalists of the Old Mutual, SABC and Sowetan Community Builder of the Year Awards have started.
Four celebrities are matched with three finalists each in the youth, adult, senior and group categories. The television personalities are Michelle Garforth, Dingaan Mokebe, Patrick Shai and Ntokozo Mbuli.
The nine provincial social services and development departments are a crucial part of the awards. They encourage and inspire voluntarism through honouring selfless community building practitioners.
The shoots will result in informative and entertaining human interest inserts, which will be flighted on SABC2 as a build-up to the national awards gala at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on December 3.
Mbuli presents the Eco Flash segment in the popular SABC2 nature conservation show 50/50.
Her specialist section focuses on environmental news, book reviews and Toktokkie, a heroes and villains feature, which invites viewers to film people who commit environmental misdeeds or those doing positive things.
Mokebe, an actor, singer and voice-over artist has featured in television shows that include Generations, Nna Sajene Kokobela, and Strictly Come Dancing. He plays James Motsamai in SABC2's popular Muvhango.
Shai has appeared in television shows, many made-for-TV movies and stage shows.
He currently portrays Kgosi Matlakala, a former magistrate who opens a guest house and wedding chapel, in the SABC2 comedy Moferefere Lenyalong.
Garforth presented the SABC3 magazine show Top Billing from 1991 to 1998 and again from 2004 until 2006. She is best known for the national broadcaster's nature shows such as Bush Radar, Spirit of Africa and Wild Ltd.
She was a contestant in the first season of Strictly Come Dancing.
