A Mpumalanga security guard, who allegedly shot and killed two people, committed suicide after being cornered by the police on Saturday afternoon.

Police said Freddy Siyabela, 39, of Schoemansdal, shot himself in the mouth after realising that he was about to be arrested.

Superintendent Malcolm Mokomeni said Siyabela was travelling in a company vehicle with a colleague when an argument ensued.

"During the argument Siyabela stopped the vehicle, drew his service pistol and shot his colleague in the chest," Mokomeni said.

"When he realised people had seen him kill his colleague, he jumped out of the vehicle and ran into nearby bushes.

"A few hours later he went to his girlfriend's place with the intention of killing her.

"Siyabela hid next to a toilet. A woman emerged from the toilet and he mistook her for his girlfriend.

"He shot her in the chest. The neighbours came out in numbers after hearing gunshots and gave chase.

"When he was cornered Siyabela drew his pistol and shot himself in front of us and the residents ."

Mokomeni said the deceased woman was identified as 44-year-old Zodwa Mhlanga. The Schoemansdal police are investigating two murder cases.
