Work together to make schools safe

Schools around the country continue to make headlines for the wrong reasons.

Schools around the country continue to make headlines for the wrong reasons.

Instead of impressive pass rates and excellence in science and technology, our schools have become playgrounds for thugs, Satanists, drug peddlers and other evils.

What happened at the Nic Diederichs Technical High School should be an eye opener for parents, education authorities and safety and security officials. A collective effort by all these parties is required to defeat these evils.

How can kids go to school with pangas, guns and knives to butcher other pupils? These problems should be addressed urgently. Psychologists, traditional healers and religious leaders must get together to help the nation rid itself of this cancer.

The violence could be attributed to alcohol, substance abuse, peer pressure, racism Satanism and so on.

It is about time that teachers are equipped to observe behavioral changes in pupils, and to alert parents so that assistance can be sought.

Our children's safety in schools is paramount and parents expect schools to provide a safe-learning environment.

Parents must not renounce and out-source the responsibility of raising their children to teachers.

Together we must strive to defeat the evil forces and ensure that our children graduate as engineers and accountants, not thugs.
