SuperSport hog silverware
SuperSport United Under-17s won the yearly Engen Under-17 tournament by beating Orlando Pirates 4-3 on penalties at Marks Park at the weekend.
They were following the footsteps of their senior team who clinched the richest Absa Premiership title last season.
This year's Matsatsantsa a Pitori's youth programme is on the right track after their Under-15 boys lifted the Manchester United Nike Under-15 crown last month.
Now they have successfully added a third trophy to their cabinet after conquering defending champions Pirates in a tough game.
If the Under-19 squad can emerge victorious from the coming SuperSport Under-19 tournament billed for next month, the team would have collected four trophies in one season.
The match between United and Pirates was a tactical battle as both teams played with caution for the entire match.
After a goalless draw in regulation time, the match went straight into a penalty shootout.
The margin remained 3-all after the first set of penalties were taken.
United striker Thabiso Khwela netted the winning goal during the sudden death stage to secure a 4-3 win for United.
United collected a trophy, gold medals and R10 000 while the runners-up received R2 500 and silver medals.
Their goalkeeper, Rowan Williams, walked away with the goalkeeper of the tournament award.
School of Excellence midfielder Phetolo Lebepe was voted best midfielder and player of the tournament.
His teammate Nicholas Killas was voted the defender of the tournament and the team collected a fair play award.
Other recipients were Nhlakanipho Ngobese (best striker), Bhuti Phiri (coach of the tournament), Nicholas Killas (defender of the tournament) and Viza Maningi (top goal scorer).
