The 32nd anniversary of the Soweto uprisings of June 16 1976 will be celebrated with political rallies and fun-filled festivities in the Western Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State on Monday.

lPresident Thabo Mbeki will speak at the Youth Day celebration at the University of the Western Cape's sports ground in Cape Town from 11am.

lIn Gauteng, Premier Mbhazima Shilowa will address the June 16 Foundation rally at Johannesburg Stadium.

There will be a wreath-laying event at the Hector Pieterson memorial and museum in Soweto, where Shilowa will be joined by Johannesburg executive mayor Amos Masondo.

Entertainment will be provided by leading South African artists.

For the first time in 10 years, the Black Consciousness Movement will hold a joint commemoration at Avalon Cemetery at 7am and proceed to Regina Mundi Church at 10am.

l At 1pm there will be a march to Moroka police station, in Rockville, where a memorandum demanding the renaming of Old Potchefstroom Road after Tsietsi Mashinini and Roodepoort Road after Khotso Seatlholo, respectively, will be handed over.

l An ANC Youth League rally will be held at Selosetsha Stadium in Thaba Nchu in Free State..

lKwaZulu-Natal Premier Sibusiso Ndebele will deliver the keynote address at the KwaMsane sports grounds at Mtubatuba.
