An Mpumalanga father of four, who was allegedly assaulted and left for dead during a robbery by a taxi driver, says he has turned down several attempts to get him to withdraw the charges.

Thandisizu Mbola, 47, of Kinross, near Evander, was allegedly attacked by a 32-year-old Embalenhle taxi driver armed with an iron bar and robbed of R4000 and a cellphone.

The incident occurred on April 26 when Mbola was returning home from visiting his daughter at Embalenhle. He sustained facial injuries, fractured limbs and all the teeth in his lower jaw were knocked out.

His alleged attacker was arrested and his (taxi driver) boss has allegedly been pestering Mbola to withdraw the case.

"He has been to see me three times with cash but I turned his offer down," Mbola said. "He promised to return today [yesterday] with a better offer. He offered me R8 000 saying R4 000 was a refund of the money stolen and the remainder was for medical costs as well as for pain and suffering.

"I didn't accept any of the money because I want justice to take its course. I have told the police about the man's visits and offer."

Constable Sibusiso Mbuli of the Evander police confirmed the arrest after the police found Mbola's cellphone and wallet in the suspect's possession. He was released on bail.

Mbola told Sowetan that he had boarded the taxi shortly after 5pm.

Thirty minutes later the driver "decided we should leave because there were no other commuters," Mbola said. "He asked for the R11 fare and I opened my wallet in his presence".

On the way to Kinross the driver stopped and walked to the back of the vehicle.

Mbola said the driver returned and assaulted him and then dumped him in a trench along the road, assuming that he was dead.
