Seventy-eight members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State for Biafra (Massob) were arraigned in a federal court in the city of Enugu on Tuesday on eight charges of treasonable felony, the officials said.
Prosecutors accused the suspects of leading unlawful protests with the intent to wage a separatist war in Nigeria. The suspects were arrested last week in various parts of southeast Nigeria during the 41st anniversary of the Biafran war.
Donning Biafran vests and cardigans, the suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges and were remanded in prison until their next hearing on July 28.
The group accuses the federal government of marginalising and neglecting Igbos and of excluding their leaders from national institutions. - Sapa-AFP
