Search for child rapist ends as girl, 8, points out boy,16
An intense search for a serial child rapist who preyed on girls younger than eight in Ivory Park, Ekurhuleni, ended on Thursday with the arrest of a 16-year-old schoolboy.
The suspect was apprehended shortly after he allegedly raped an eight-year-old girl near Riverside Bridge on Thursday afternoon.
Her case was the sixth, including that of a four-year-old girl who was raped in a shack in January, according to police.
The breakthrough brought to an end the terror that had gripped the communities of sections six and seven of Extension 3 in Ivory Park.
The modus operandi in five of the six cases reported over the past 10 weeks was the same and the victims were schoolgirls aged between seven and eight.
Most victims were lured from playgrounds commonly called "the park" by locals. The suspect allegedly promised to buy them a "quarter".
He would then ask his victim to accompany him to a spaza shop to get the promised bread but would drag them into the open veld along the way where he allegedly raped them.
Ivory Park police spokesman Lesiba Manamela said the schoolboy was identified by his last victim at his home on Thursday.
After the alleged rape she had reported the matter at home and even took her sister to the suspect's home.
The suspect's father took the boy to the local police station in the company of the victim and her sister.
The boy allegedly confessed before he was charged and released into the custody of his father.
Sources close to the investigating team told Sowetan that the boy was expected to make a confession to a magistrate at the Tembisa magistrate's court today
Manamela said according to the latest victim the boy had asked her the way to a spaza shop where he could buy a "quarter".
It is believed she showed him a nearby shop but he said he was not satisfied with it.
"She took him to another shop further down and along the way he allegedly took her by force into the nearby veld and raped her, "Manamela said.
